8 Reasons Your Work Doesn’t Define Who You Are, You Do

One bad day at work can make you question your existence. So just like that, on one such bad day while I was questioning my own, my friend pointed out that I was taking work too seriously. To which I agreed. However, this led to a really solid discussion about how we millennials consider work life as our only life.
There is nothing wrong in considering work as our only life. The only thing is, sometimes, it takes a toll. You feel like s*%t when you feel your performance is not up to the mark. In fact, some of our corporate  brethren can’t even think beyond their fat paychecks, or imagine life existing without the latest smartphone. This belief gives birth to false pride and brooding prejudice that makes one believe that their job title gives them the ultimate power to rule the world and to look down upon people.
But the truth is, it does not.
You’re beyond your designation. Whether you’re a clerk or a CEO, what you do to earn your livelihood doesn’t define who you are as a person.

1. Happiness is not about how much you make every month

Many might not agree, but it’s a fact. Your peace of mind, health, and ego are at stake for the amount that gets credited to your account at the end of every month. There exists a part of human population whose happiness knows no bounds when it rains. Similarly, there are people who don’t really need much in life and are satisfied. Because at the end of the day, money is hardly everything.

2. Passion and a job are two different things

What if you’re a bad engineer but a good painter? Or an average manager but an excellent travel guide? There is something you’re excellent at and it comes to you naturally. Then there are some things you’re forced to do. Very few are fortunate enough to have found their job basis their passion. The rest keep finding ways to balance the two.

3. Jobs keep changing, but you don’t

Instead, you modify your routines, methods and ethics accordingly. But, what doesn’t change is your grit and who you are as a person. Doing different jobs with the same spirit defines you, not the job itself.

4. Your job takes up only one-third of your day

Ideally, you spend eight hours at work - the other sixteen are for you to do whatever you want to do. Think about that and use those hours wisely!

5. Your job doesn’t define you - you define your job

You decide to choose your job and you are the one who decides to take up the responsibilities. It’s not the other way around.

6. You become a more holistic person when you reveal the other aspects of your life

Your colleagues will be surprised when they see you rocking the dance floor at an office party or if they see your stunning photographs. Mix it up!

7. Real success lies in striking a fair balance between work and life

When Brian Dyson, former vice chairman and COO of Coca-Cola said, ‘work is a rubber ball’, he couldn’t have been more right. If you drop a rubber ball, it will bounce back, but the other four balls — family, health, friends, and spirit — are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged, or even shattered. Therefore, striking a balance between these five is of utmost importance.

8. Getting a life doesn’t mean ignoring your job

When your friends and colleagues tell you to ‘get a life’, you probably should listen, because you might be taking work too personally.
