The Model, who would like to have a gym session with Salman Khan, says that Punjabi food, as colorful and delicious as it may be, is not as bad for you as one is prone to think.

Jaideep Pandey in a frank conversation with Amrit:

How does it feel being the pioneer in Bikini modelling in India?
I don't know if I am the pioneer in Bikini modelling, however, I am one of the first women of Indian origin to compete as a pro bikini fitness model worldwide. For me putting on a bikini is more than just physical. It's about feeling comfortable, confident and sexy. All women should feel this way! If training hard and eating right helps you achieve your goal for a fitness competition, beauty pageant, beach vacation, wedding or post baby...why not share it in a positive way.

How challenging do you find modelling to be?
Whether I work as a model, a spokesperson, or as a media personality, behind the scenes work is work and rather technical. Not glamorous as one would assume. It, perhaps, is easy to stand around on a photoshoot and let others guide you through the creative process. Our job is to perform on cue, and I do my job very well. But as models have photographers, actors have directors, and musicians have conductors, the final performance is what matters. The hard physical work has been done long before and it's a time for all the creatives to come together and create art.

On a scale of ten, where would you place Indian women when it comes to fitness?
I think that Indian women are a lot more aware of their health today than they were ten years ago. When I first started in the fitness industry in 2003, there was no other Indian woman in the scene of bodybuilding, competitions and or published in fitness magazines. I believe what is needed in India is education on nutrition. There should be initiatives to make healthy shifts and minimize high carbs, fried foods, sugars and late night dinners for a change to happen. This won't happen overnight, therefore, it needs to be constantly reiterated by doctors, governments, health professionals and the media.

Punjabis are known for their lavish food habits. How do you control the Punjabi within you?
Punjabi food, as colourful and delicious as it may be, is not as bad for you as one is prone to think. When I am celebrating holi or personal events with my family and community, which can be quite often, I am very cognizant of how much I eat. I sometimes drive people crazy because I want to try everything, but it's a bite of this or a taste of that. Portion control is always essential: knowing how something is cooked and the ingredients involved is essential. People should be smart eaters, and know the quality of their food as much as possible.

What's the most common training question that people ask you?
Will I get a flat tummy if I do abs everyday? This is asked by both men and women. The truth is that abs have nothing to do with how many crunches you do but everything with what you eat. To peel off the layers of belly fat; consistent cardio, strength training and nutrition is key. Intensity is the key! I suggest High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and a calorie deficit clean diet to slash off the fat.

Who has the best physique in Bollywood?
Male: Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ranveer Singh and John Abraham Female: Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra

What are the contents of your fridge?
Lemons, grapefruit, blueberries, strawberries, salmon, basa, chicken, turkey, eggs, flaxseed, walnuts, almonds, greek yogurt, feta cheese, almond milk, kale, bell peppers, spinach, mushrooms, cucumbers, asparagus, zucchini, dark chocolate, natural peanut butter, lentil soup (dal).

Your philosophy of life?

I am one individual in an ocean of individuals. In the west I was taught that under Law, we are all equal with rights of self-expression and the dignity of self-determination. In the east, and more precisely, as an Indian, I was taught we are all one people, with a great past and a better f future seeking spiritual enlightenment. It's important that we are all different, unique and individual.

How important do you find inner peace for a fit body?
I ask you, why anyone separates the two? A complex understanding of what is good for us, what nurtures the body, spirit and soul must come with the understanding that we have to be good to ourselves as we should be good to others. A fit body but more so a fit lifestyle is a catalyst for inner peace and respect for the temple where the soul resides. There is great joy in calming your spirit and eating gifts from mother earth. A sincere appreciation for all the minerals, nutrition and taste it gives us. Next time, grab a piece of fruit, observe the beauty, serve yourself and relish in every scrumptious bite.

Who do you think would make the best gym partner from Bollywood?

I'd love to have a gym session with Salman Khan. He was one of the first actors to sculpt his body in the industry. He's kept it up and made it his lifestyle. I have tremendous respect for that. In fact, he is looking better every year and I would love to get an anti-aging tip or two.

Any offers from Bollywood?
Over the years there has been interest from directors and producers; none of which has transpired into anything relevant. If it's meant to happen, it will.
