10 Psychological Facts That You Didn’t Know Could Make You Happier

It always helps if you know the inner working of your mind better.
Because in the end, our brain works in ways we are still trying to understand. But the things we have understood have made many things very clear to us.
We can use this knowledge and make our daily lives better – and happier.
How many of the following tricks did you know of in the first place?

1. You become more likeable if you commit a blunder

But that depends on your personality too.
If you are generally is very able person, a clumsy blunder will make you more attractive, winning more friends, and increasing your happiness.
On the other hand, if you are generally a clumsy person, do NOT make a blunder, because it will make you look less attractive, leading to unhappiness.

2. The busier you are, the happier you will be

Dopamine is the hormone that makes you happy. But it is the same hormone that makes you productive too.
The trick is that it works the other way round too – if you are productive, you get a rush of dopamine, making you happier.
People who multitask, do things quickly at a fast pace feel happier.

With the Earth getting crammed with more people every day and you getting unhappier with that, and you are looking for happiness, maybe outer space is the place to go to.
Turns out, astronauts that fly into space, feel euphoric because they can see Earth from a different perspective altogether. They see no borders and certainly see no reason to be hateful.
Now you know where to go when you feel down. Up.

4. If you want to perform well, you have to put more expectations on yourself

It is called the pygmalion effect. The more expectations you have, the better you perform. It happens more effectively if a third person expects something out of you.
It is a combination of personal relations, belief and a purpose for life. This makes people more focused and motivated, and in the end, happier.

5. Beware of the contrast effect

Have you ever drunk bournvita after eating a spoonful of sugar?
The milk tastes bland, right? It is because the sugar was too sweet, and hence you cannot really taste the sweetness of the milk, even though it was sweet too.
The same effect takes place in our head too. If you have eaten extremely good food for the past 3 days and are given a decent meal on the fourth day, you will think that the latest meal is bland.
The same applies to people as well. It applies the other way around too – if you have been with bad people all your lives, one decent person will look like a saint if he comes across.
Beware!

6. You become more rational and logical when you think in another language

If you are afraid that you become too emotional all the time, start thinking in another language. Most of our unhappiness comes from the regret of taking bad decisions. That is why you can start thinking in another language and make better decisions.

7. Humans can be friends with only about 150 people. Don’t try to overextend and get unhappy when it does not work out

Be it on Facebook or outside, you can only be personal and close to a maximum of 150 people. It is meaningful until that number.
Anything beyond this is just overextending your social stamina.

8. A hug, cuddle, and holding hands make you feel better.

Hugging a person for 20 seconds can make you a more trusting person. Holding hands and gentle cuddling also makes you happier.
And this is not for a small duration. Hugs and cuddles have long term effects in happiness.

9. People start lying at the end of the day, so you might want to stay away from reveals

Lies hurt, and when discovered, they make you unhappy. The best way is to never ask people to reveal things during the end of the day.
This is because you lose control of fabricating a lie as the day progresses.
The effect applies to you too. If you want to keep a secret in, better not talk about it in the evening!

10. Everyone feels the same things you do. Horoscopes, quiz predictions are all crap, basically. Do not tailor your day according to them!

It is called the Forer effect.
You think they are tailored for you, but they are actually not. People are more complex that 5 lines that sum them up in a horoscope that is made purposely generic to cater to a large crowd.
