11 Things NOT To Do When Oiling Your Hair!

A nice, relaxing hair oil massage every once in awhile goes a long way, ladies. Not only does it boost nourishment and hydration for your locks, it also rejuvenates you and regulates blood flow to the scalp. However, there are certain common hair oiling mistakes we all make that are coming in the way of us reaping the benefits of an awesome champi. Without further delay, we give you 11 things NOT to do when oiling your hair.

1. Not heating the oil before applying it

What’s better than a fab champi with your fave oil? Well, it is an awesome champi with the very same oil, heated. Warm oil penetrates the hair and scalp more easily, and is more soothing too. You can either stick a bowl of oil in the microwave for up to 10 seconds, or your can place it in a bigger bowl with hot water in it to warm it up. The latter would be better though, as that will ensure the oil isn’t too hot for application, and the nutrients in the oil aren’t damaged due to excessive heating.

2. Massaging too hard

It may be tempting to go all out with your champi and have your head massaged hard. This ladies, will do you more harm than good. Massaging too rigorously can create knots in the hair, damage the hair roots and cause it to break. A soft massage in a circular motion is what we recommend for fabulous results.

3. Not combing before a massage

Massaging tangled or knotted hair is a big no. This will only cause further knotting and damage to the hair and its roots. Rule number 1 is to always comb out your hair, make it tangle-free, and then start massaging it gently.

4. Not mixing up your fave oils

Two oils are better than one, ladies. Be it a mix of coconut and argan oil or mustard oil with a few drops of olive oil in it - if the goodness of one gives you a glossy, healthy mane, imagine the multiple benefits of using two together! Pick your faves, mix them up and start your massage right away, we say.

5. Tying it up too tightly after oiling

Post a head massage, your hair roots tend to loosen up a bit. The one thing you should avoid in this case is tying up your hair too tightly right after oiling it. This will further weaken the roots of your hair and cause significant amount of breakage and damage.

6. Using your fingertips instead of cotton

The most common way to massage your head is, in fact, with your fingertips. But ladies, believe it when we say, you should use a piece of cotton instead. Cotton is easy on the roots of your hair and will be the most gentle way to massage the scalp. Dip a piece of cotton in hot oil, squeeze it to remove any excess oil and rub it on your scalp and along the length of your hair for the best results.

7. Oiling your hair way too often

Yes, oiling your hair on a regular basis is amazing! But do not do this more than twice a week. Tampering too much with your scalp can irritate it and let’s not discount the fact that removing that oil makes us want to shampoo multiple times and this may eventually strip your hair of its natural sheen and moisture. While champis are amazing, it’s important to not get carried away.

8. Not considering your hair type while selecting an oil

Choosing the oil according to your hair type is a smart move, ladies. Go for argan oil if you have dry, frizzy hair, almond oil is good for beating dandruff and coconut oil suits all hair types. If you have a specific hair problem that you want to target, choose you hair oil wisely, we say.

9. Concentrating only on the scalp

As relaxing as it is to get your scalp massaged, spreading oil down the length of your hair is equally important if you want a lustrous, healthy looking mane. When applying oil on your scalp, section by section, make it a point to run that piece of oily cotton along your hair strands as well and give them some much-needed hydration too.

10. Not leaving it on long enough

Applying oil in your hair and rushing for a head wash immediately after makes this beauty treatment quite pointless. Let the hair soak in the oil for about an hour and if you can, wrap a hot, damp towel around your hair so that your pores open up and really absorb all the goodness of the oil. A hair wash with lukewarm water after this is the best way to go about it.

11. Heat styling hair after doing this entire treatment

The glossy, healthy and soft hair you get after washing off that oil is sure to bring a smile on your face. We suggest you don’t blow dry or do any sort of heat styling as that will dry up the hair and nullify the positive effects of that lovely champi. Take a break from that styling and say hello to gorgeous tresses!
